The fourth grade has been busy learning about Illinois. They used graphic organizers to gather information from both books and websites. In addition to learning how to take notes without plagerizing, they also learned how to cite sources and create a bibliography. Once the research was done, the students chose either a story cube, travel brochure or trading card to demostrate their knowledge.
Tying in with the science curriculum, the fifth graders have been researching alternative energy. Each group was responsible for learning about one of the following types of energy: biomass, geothermal, solar power, wind power and hydropower. The students took notes from both books and websites being careful to put the ideas in their own words and use bullet points instead of complete sentences to avoid plagerism. In addition, they learned how to make a correct bibliography which was included at the the end of their Google Presentation. This was truly a collaborative effort as each student was responsible for a different aspect - the definition, uses, positives, negatives and interesting facts. They all added pictures and cited where the pictures came from as well. Each group will show their presentation to the class, and then the class will vote on which form of energy is the most cost effective, the most beneficial to the environment, and is useful to a wide group of people.
