We had such a successful Google Hangout with author Uma Krishnaswami on September 12th, I truly hope Google Hangouts will become an annual event. The students were able to listen to Uma in their classrooms, and they were able to send questions to the library where Mrs. MacTavish's class read them in front of the camera. Uma answered them all with wonderful anecdotes.
I think it's very important for students to hear about the writing process and what inspires authors. She showed us her office and her own personal book collection. It's fun to see what authors read themselves! The best part, I feel, was when Uma showed us the "map" for her upcoming book. I would have never thought to sketch out the plot in a picture map.
Many authors have websites with short videos and/or question sections. I hope to explore these with the students throughout the year. Who knows, we may have a budding author at Sullivan!
