Both 4th and 5th graders have been spending time using the Destiny catalog to find books that are of interest to them, appropriate reading level and the right length. The catalog has a great deal of information including a tab where they can create a list of Favorites to help make checkout more productive.
The fourth graders practiced looking up books by their title, author and subject. They learned how to click on the book or title to find more information such as reviews, number of pages and reading levels. They will practice looking up a book or choosing a book from their Favorites list and then actually finding it on the shelves. Each book in the Destiny catalog has a sublocation telling which area in the library to find it.
During the fifth grade library classes, the students took a Genre Personality quiz to see which genre were most suitable to them. Then they did a search on Destiny to see all the books that the Sullivan library has in that genre. From there, they were able to put books that appealed to them and/or were in their reading level to add to their Favorites list. The classes also engaged in Book Tasting to dabble in many books trying to find books that they want to read. The whole idea is to make checkout time more productive.
The more the students are familiar with the library, the more books they will read!
