As I begin my 8th year in the library, I reflect at the changes that have occurred since first inheriting the Sullivan library. Not only has the physical setup of the room, the inventory of books, and the lessons changed, but the students have changed too. There is much more competition with electronics, more requirements of classroom time, and more involvement of after school activities.
So my focus this year will be on bringing back the enjoyment of reading. I like to come up with a theme each year, and the theme I have chosen revolves around food. Everyone is enticed by food, so maybe I can use that to make books more enticing. I plan to have a Book Cafe at lunch, where students can come in and listen to books, discuss books or hangout in the library. I also plan to do "Book Tastings" so students can explore different topics, genre, and styles of books.
I have added different sections to the library to also promote the enjoyment of reading. We have Quick Reads (picture books), Jump Starters (beginning chapter books), Series, Audio books and ebooks in addition to the regular fiction and nonfiction books. There is a comfortable quiet reading area with a couch and different types of seating as well as a variety of seats around the library so students can read alone or with a partner.
We will start the year with A Book to Bridge Two Schools using Book Uncle and Me as a read aloud with every classroom in both Ross and Sullivan. The teachers will be reading this book aloud to their classrooms and will be partnered up with a class from the other school to discuss the book and do activities together.
Hopefully 2018-2019 will be an enjoyable year of reading for everyone!
