As the students walk into the library this year, they see a big "tree" covered in animals with their teachers' faces holding books. This year Sullivan is Wild About Reading. Each library class starts off with a short read aloud sitting in our comfy quiet reading area. It's a great way to begin the lesson while students are still coming in and getting settled. It also allows me to share great books and connect with the classroom curriculum. Then we move to the table area for the rest of the lesson.
So far, the students have learned how to use the Destiny catalog to find "good fit" books. The catalog has lexile levels for all the books as well as descriptions to guide the students in choosing good books. The students also learned how to use the call numbers (or address) to find the books in the library.
The students have also taken their first ReadnQuiz of the year and have learned all about our Reading Rocks program. We hope to add more 5th graders to the Noteable Readers wall, and we all look forward to seeing who the first 4th grader will be to get a note up in their section. The students know that ANY type of reading counts - books can be from any library, can be read to or listened to, and books for their classroom reading challenges or assignments also count.
We're off to a great start!
